Since its inception 20 years ago, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has saved more than 25 million lives by providing HIV treatment and other lifesaving services in Sub-Saharan Africa and other countries. Leaders in the field analyzed the impact of PEPFAR’s comprehensive strategy on HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support in different regions of the world during IDWeek 2023’s Closing Plenary, PEPFAR: A Model for Global Public Health Intervention, now available to watch on-demand. To continue this program’s lifesaving work, Congress must pass legislation that authorizes the program’s continuation so the United States can help achieve global HIV elimination goals. Contact your congressional representative and senators to urge Congress to swiftly reauthorize PEPFAR.
